What are Permanent Cosmetics?

Also called cosmetic tattooing, permanent make-up, or occasionally, micropigmentation, it is a procedure of artistically placing color into the upper dermal layer of the skin. Although permanent, aging and sun exposure will cause it to fade over time. For this reason, touch-up or refresher appointments may be desired every few years to keep your makeup looking its best.

What Are The Advantages of Permanent Make-up?

Permanent make-up is perfect for the busy person who has little time to apply make-up, for the athlete who wants to look natural and those with oily skin whose make-up seems to disappear after a short time. Also, those allergic to conventional cosmetics or contact lens wearers, and those with impaired vision may benefit from the application of permanent make-up.

What procedures are available to me?

EYEBROWS - are created for many reasons, such as for brows that are too light, short, sparse or nonexistent. They can be designed to enhance your face and personality, create lift, symmetry and balance.

EYELINER - enhances the shape of your eyes, and creates the illusion of larger, properly spaced eyes, and whether you choose natural lash enhancement, or darker, dramatic liner, your eyes will become more defined than the bare look of no makeup or messy eyeliner.

LIP LINER/FULL LIP COLOR - corrects uneven, lips that are too thin, or too thick, scarred, or lacking in color. If you have trouble with your lipstick feathering, permanent cosmetics correct the problem. It is also used to enhance the shape of a nicely shaped mouth.

Paramedical Micropigmentation procedures have taken the ancient art form of tattooing into a newly created and increasingly more demanding specialty. Specializing in paramedical Micropigmentation can be most rewarding. Blending color artistry skill with various Micropigmentation techniques to camouflage and restore the natural skin tone pigments of depigmented skin has benefited many. Paramedical Micropigmentation procedures can provide an aesthetically pleasing alternative to the sole usage of paramedical makeup. Although these treatments have many demands, it is also possible to repigment skin, camouflage scars and reconstruct areolas.CAMOUFLAGE and AREOLA PIGMENTATION - are specialty procedures that help individuals with certain needs.  It is used to soften, blend and minimize scars, or to create a nipple from breast reconstruction.

Reduction of Wrinkles using a tattoo machine

What will it look like?

A free consultation is provided, before the procedure is performed. You may come in wearing your makeup, and together, Terri P will make changes using regular make-up, discuss color and shape and you will have explained to you limitations and or benefits of the procedure for you. She will address any concerns either of you may have regarding the results you desire.

In What Other Ways Is Permanent Make-up Useful?

Permanent make-up is very often used to "correct nature's mistakes." Examples of this are....eyebrows where one is higher than the other, or lips that "shrink" or lose color with age. Still other necessary uses of permanent make-up are for those that have vitiligo or alopecia.  And lastly, skin re-pigmentation due to burns or reconstructive surgery (i.e. breasts, cleft lip).

Is Permanent Make-up Really Permanent?

Although some "fading" may occur and a "touchup" visit every couple of years may be necessary, the pigment will remain in the skin forever. It is essential that a sun block be applied over the permanent make-up area at any time that you are exposed to the sun or a tanning bed. Also, chlorine is bleach and continuous exposure can "fade" pigment. Many skin rejuvenation products and processes such as retin-a, alpha-hydroxy, laser resurfacing, chemical peels and micro dermabrasion can also cause premature fading of pigment. If in doubt always feel free to call and ask questions. Your new permanent cosmetics will last a lifetime.  Generally, the lighter, and more natural you have it, the more likely you will want to periodically freshen up the color, every few years.  Your colors are documented and future touch ups are offered at a very low cost to ensure your makeup always looks its best. The softening of color that is associated with tattoos is sometimes very desirable with cosmetics, and the muting is a nice look without ever touching it up. Hot sun climates will require touching up sooner compared to a colder or rainy climate.  You will want to avoid skin peeling products such as Retin-A or microdermabrasion directly on the tattooed areas.

What should I expect?

Immediately following the procedure, there may be some swelling, and redness and very rarely, a small amount of bruising, lasting a couple hours to a couple days. Within 3 to 7 days, the color will be lighter, and less than the first day. In 3-4 weeks, you are ready to have your first complimentary touch up. This lightening is to be expected, and is a wonderful safety feature with this procedure, allowing for changes in shaping and color if necessary.

How Long Does It Take And Can It Be Completed In One Visit?
Why do I need touch-ups?

Most procedures take approximately two hours. About 4-6 weeks following the initial application, one perfection visit will be scheduled to perfect lines and colors. There is no additional charge for this visit. In the event slight maintenance should be required in years to come, these visits will be charged on a per case basis

Your complimentary touch up is for peace of mind. This allows for the freedom to add and perfect. Approaching each procedure conservatively is the best approach to permanent makeup.

Can I change it?

Although the procedure is permanent, shape variations and color adjustments are possible either during the initial touch ups, or any time in the future. It is recommended to consider keeping it natural, and enhancing it with regular make up if you are not sure how dramatic you would like to have it permanently.

Is There Discomfort Involved? Does it hurt?

With the use of over the counter topical anesthetic creams specifically formulated for permanent cosmetics, the discomfort is greatly reduced, most of our clients describe it as slight. Every measure is taken to make you comfortable and pain free. If you are apprehensive and would like to take medication prescribed by your physician prior to your appointment, it may help alleviate discomfort. Everyone has a different threshold of pain but you will find that overall the discomfort is short lived in exchange for long term rewards that you get from the procedure.

What Can I Expect Immediately Following A Procedure?

The results immediately following the procedure will look somewhat darker and more pronounced than desired. Within the week, the excess pigment is sloughed off leaving a soft natural look. Right afterwards, you may experience slight swelling and redness but only minimal discomfort.

Is It Expensive?

Fees vary from $375 to $1500 per procedure, depending on the amount of work involved. Skin camouflage is based on an hourly rate. No doubt that you have seen advertisements or have heard of services being offered from under $100 to over $1000 per procedure. It is advisable to take the time to check quality and experience of the technician before making your decision. This procedure is permanent and will most certainly be enjoyed forever.

Is the procedure safe?

  • Safety and comfort are of utmost concern. Single use, sterile disposable, individually wrapped needles, tubes and tips are used. Pigments, and any products used are discarded after procedure. Strict adherence to OSHA standards for sanitization and sterilization
  • All instruments used are 100% disposable for "one-time" use only
  • Client’s medications are carefully reviewed during a consultation to assure the greatest of care
  • Small scratch test is available (in the confines of the scalp) prior to any procedure to test if an individual may be predisposed to an allergy to the pigments used. Only a Physician may determine a reaction.
  • Topical solutions are safely applied just prior to the procedure to produce a desired level of anesthesia for a comfortable experience throughout the process.

All OSHA guidelines are followed. There has been much confusion in the past regarding MRI's and tattoos. For your reassurance, go to http://www.mrisafety.com/  register and type the word "tattoo" in the searchbox or www.mrisafety.com/safety_article.asp?subject=145
